چکیده

We present infrared observations at wavelengths of 60 and 100 μm and contemporaneous radio (five frequencies) and optical (R band) monitoring of the BL Lac object 2007+777. During a three-week campaign with the ISO1 spacecraft, the VLA2, the Effelsberg 100 m radio telescope, and optical telescopes in Heidelberg and on Calar Alto, Spain3, we observed variability on time scales of a few days at 100 μm, at radio, and at optical frequencies. We discuss briefly several generic models which could account for our observations. The attempt at explaining the results by an intrinsic mechanism requires an extremely small source angular size of the order of a few μas4, which can be reconciled with the 1012 K inverse Compton limit only when the Doppler factor of the bulk flow is about 40. The general behavior of the variability of the BL Lac object 2007+777 found in this IR-radio campaign follows the expectations of a shock-in-jet model, and we argue that this is the most likely explanation of our observations.

ISO observations of the BL Lac object PKS 2155 – 304 ⋆

The BL Lacertae object PKS 2155–304 was observed by the Infrared Space Observatory in May and June 1996, during a multiwavelength campaign. These are the first observations in the mid– and far–infrared bands since IRAS. In the observing period, the source showed no detectable time variability at 4.0, 14.3, 60 and 90 μm. The spectrum from 2.8 to 100 μm is well fitted by a single power law with e...

Highly Polarized Optically-selected Bl Lacertae Objects

Observations of candidate BL Lacertae objects spectroscopically selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) reveal a large fraction with high polarization (P > 3%). This result confirms that synchrotron radiation makes an important contribution to the observed optical continuum for most objects in the sample. The SDSS sample can be divided into separate categories, with objects of undeter...

Term Optical Variability in Broad Absorption Line QSOs

We present the first results from a pilot programme to monitor the short term optical variability in Broad Absorption Line system QSOs. Intra-night optical variations of ∼ 5% were detected on time scales of ∼ one hour in QSOs 0846+156 and 0856+172. Further, the mean magnitude level decreased in the two objects by ∼ 0.05 and ∼ 0.15 magnitude respectively during the period of our observations. Th...

Modeling the Spectral Energy Distribution and Variability of 3c 66a during the Webt Campaign of 2003y2004

The BL Lac object 3C 66Awas observed in an extensive multiwavelength monitoring campaign (the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope [WEBT] campaign) from2003 July until 2004April. The spectral energy distribution (SED)wasmeasured over the entire electromagnetic spectrum, with flux measurements from radio to X-ray frequencies and upper limits in the very high energy (VHE) -ray regime. Here we use a time-...

Polarization and Variations of BL Lacertae Objects

BL Lacertae objects are an extreme subclass of AGNs showing rapid and large-amplitude variability, high and variable polarization, and core-dominated radio emissions. If a strong beaming effect is the cause of the extreme observation properties, one would expect that these properties would be correlated with each other. Based on the relativistic beaming model, relationships between the polariza...
